چکیده

A thermodynamic model of a plasma boundary layer, characterized by enhanced temperature contrasts and “maximum entropy production,” is proposed. The system shows bifurcation if the heat flux entering through the inner boundary exceeds a critical value. The state with a larger temperature contrast !larger entropy production" sustains a self-organized flow. An inverse cascade of energy is proposed as the underlying physical mechanism for the realization of such a heat engine. © 2008 American Institute of Physics. #DOI: 10.1063/1.2890189$

Thermal Transport and Entropy Production Mechanisms in a Turbulent Round Jet at Supercritical Thermodynamic Conditions

In the present paper, thermal transport and entropy production mechanisms in a turbulent round jet of compressed nitrogen at supercritical thermodynamic conditions are investigated using a direct numerical simulation. First, thermal transport and its contribution to the mixture formation along with the anisotropy of heat fluxes and temperature scales are examined. Secondly, the entropy producti...

The Second Law of Thermodynamics and the Global Climate System: a Review of the Maximum Entropy Production Principle

[1] The long-term mean properties of the global climate system and those of turbulent fluid systems are reviewed from a thermodynamic viewpoint. Two general expressions are derived for a rate of entropy production due to thermal and viscous dissipation (turbulent dissipation) in a fluid system. It is shown with these expressions that maximum entropy production in the Earth s climate system sugg...

Simulation of particle diffusion and heat transfer in a two-phase turbulent boundary layer using the Eulerian-Eulerian approach

This work investigates the response of two-dimensional, turbulent boundary layer characteristics over a flat plate to the presence of suspended particulate matter. Both phases are assumed to be interacting continua. That is, the carrier fluid equations are considered to be coupled with the particle-phase equations. A finite-difference technique with non-uniform grid has been employed for the so...

Towards an Analytical Model for Film Cooling Prediction using Integral Turbulent Boundary layer

The objective of this work is to develop deep theoretical methods that are based on the solution of the integral boundary layer equations for investigating film cooling in liquid rocket engine. The integral model assumes that heat is transferred from hot free stream gas to the liquid film both by convection and radiation. The mass is transferred to the free srteam gas by the well-known blowing ...

Turbulence Structure of the Hurricane Boundary Layer between the Outer Rainbands

As part of the Coupled Boundary Layers Air–Sea Transfer (CBLAST)-Hurricane program, flights were conducted to directly measure turbulent fluxes and turbulence properties in the high-wind boundary layer of hurricanes between the outer rainbands. For the first time, vertical profiles of normalized momentum fluxes, sensible heat and humidity fluxes, and variances of three-dimensional wind velociti...
